Around four million people in Germany live with a rare disease. They are mostly genetic. And are often associated with severe, chronic courses. There are no diagnostic procedures or therapeutic guidelines for many rare diseases, and available treatments often only alleviate symptoms but cannot cure the disease. This issue reports on research and care of rare diseases.
