Since 1996 the Robert Koch Institute has provided the Postgraduate Training for Applied Epidemiology (PAE). The programme aims to train scientists in the field of infectious disease epidemiology and places a particular focus on applying epidemiological methods for the prevention and control of infectious diseases when working in the German public health service (ÖGD).

On 1 January 2025, the EU Reference Laboratory for Public Health on "High-risk, emerging and zoonotic bacterial pathogens" (EURL-PH-HEZB) has launched its activities as one of the new EU reference laboratories for public health (EURLs). The EURL is led by a consortium coordinated by the Robert Koch Institute’s unit ZBS 2 "Highly Pathogenic Microorganisms".

ZKI-PH 1: AI-Fundamentals

Research conducted within ZKI-PH 1 “AI-Fundamentals” focuses on the strategic development of novel AI technologies for public health applications. This will include designing fundamental AI methods, such as models for generating synthetic data, and novel analytical approaches to address methodological challenges. It will also include researching the ethical dimensions of AI applications in health and ensuring the quality and reliability of AI models used in medicine, society and public health.

The aim of the AntibioResDE (Antibiotic Resistance in Germany) project is to provide up-to-date information on antibiotic resistance in Germany on an electronic platform in order to simplify access to resistance data for clinical practice. AntibioResDE can thus help to prevent the development of resistance and thus treatment failure in bacterial infections.
