The local health authority is a central pillar for protecting the health of the population. People in socially disadvantaged circumstances are an important target group for the public health service. Social inequality and health is the motto for this year's Local Health Authority Day on 19 March. "Education, occupation and income also influence health opportunities and life expectancy in Germany," emphasises Prof. Dr Lars Schaade, President of the Robert Koch Institute. The social inequality of health opportunities and disease risks is also a focus of epidemiological research and health reporting at the Robert Koch Institute.

Climate justice, communication, co-benefits: Part 3 of the status report on climate change and health published

The third and final part of the German status report on climate change and health has been published in the Journal of Health Monitoring. In this final part of the report the researchers examine health equity with regard to the effects of climate change, the im-portance of target group-specific climate change communication and summarise the need for action based on the recommendations formulated in the other articles.

The second part of the new German status report "Climate Change and Health" focuses on non-communicable diseases. The six articles in the fourth issue of the Journal of Health Monitoring (S4/2023) range from health risks due to heat and other extreme weather events, the influence of climate change on allergic diseases and mental health, tothe health consequences of changed UV radiation and increased air pollution. The 37 authors from 23 institutions review diverse risk and protective factors, risk groups, the impact of climate change on health care and infrastructures, and provide recommendations for action.

"Climate change is the greatest challenge facing humanity" – new status report on climate change and health

A new report, coordinated by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), provides an overview of the health impacts of climate change and ways to counteract them. The publication was coordinated through the project KlimGesundAkt, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Health. More than 90 authors from over 30 research institutions and authorities have worked on this report which will be published as a series of articles in three Special Issues of the Journal of Health Monitoring. The first part published on 1 June focuses on the impact of climate change on infectious diseases. An introductory article outlines the complex field of climate change and health as a whole.
