Impact of climate change on non-communicable diseases and mental health – Part 2 of the German Status Report on Climate Change and Health 2023

Special Issue S4/2023 is the second of three parts of the German Status Report on Climate Change and Health. Reviews by leading scientists address the health risks associated with advancing climate change in relation to non-communicable diseases and mental health for Germany. All articles also make recommendations for adaptation measures.

The first article focuses on heat as the most tangible effect of climate change. The expected risks are described.

Heat is only one of many extreme weather events that are increasingly associated with climate change, however. The second article discusses the cascading risks associated with other extreme weather events such as storms and floods.

The third article provides an overview of the health effects to be expected from changes in UV radiation.

The fourth article describes the effects of climate change on allergic diseases in Germany.

The fifth focuses on the health consequences of increased ambient air pollution and the interactions with climate change.

A scoping review on climate change and mental health in Germany can be found in the sixth article. Impacts, vulnerable groups and resilience factors are addressed.
