Impact of climate change on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance – Part 1 of the German Status Report on Climate Change and Health 2023

Special Issue S3/2023 is the first of three parts of the German Status Report on Climate Change and Health. Reviews by leading scientists address the health risks associated with advancing climate change in relation to various types of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

A joint editorial by the federal authorities whose scientists contribute their expertise to this status report prefaces the report and highlights the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation when tackling the enormous challenges that climate change poses.

The first article introduces the topic of climate change and health and provides an outlook on the contents of the following articles.

The second article is dedicated to vector- and rodent-borne diseases, including Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis and West Nile virus infections, and highlights the influence of climate change on these diseases.

The third article provides an overview of waterborne infections and intoxications and investigates whether these are more likely to occur in warmer bodies of waters.

In the fourth article, the authors focus on the influence of climate change on foodborne infections and intoxications.

A systematic review of the threat posed by antibiotic resistance in connection with climate change can be found in the fifth article.
