On 1 September 2021, the new WHO Hub on Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence opens in Berlin. On this occasion, Prof Lothar H. Wieler, president of the Robert Koch Institute, and WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus signed a Memorandum of Understanding to further cement their partnership and create the framework for close collaboration with the Hub. RKI scientists will be working alongside leading WHO experts and other global partners here in Berlin to better predict, prevent, detect, prepare for and respond to worldwide health threats.

The RKI, including through its Centre for International Health Protection, has been increasing its international activities and work over the past decade, in particular to support strengthening public health actors - nationally, regionally, internationally. RKI has also been increasing its capacity to provide assistance during health crisis remotely and on-site. A central aspect of all of these activities has been an ever deepening partnership with the WHO. RKI considers WHO as cornerstone of global health governance.
