Local Health Authority Day 2024: Social Inequality and Health

“Social Inequality and Health” is this year’s Local Health Authority Day on 19 March: Education, occupation and income also influence health opportunities and life expectancy in Germany. People with a low socioeconomic status are more commonly affected by chronic diseases, psychosomatic symptoms, injuries due to accidents, and disabilities. Thus, population groups with a low social status are an important target group for health authorities.

On 19 March 1745, Johann Peter Frank was born. The German physician is regarded as the founder of social hygiene and public health services; the awareness day proclaimed by RKI is intended to pay tribute to the local health authorities, which represent an important pillar of public health worldwide, but whose importance is often unknown. The social inequality of health opportunities and disease risks is also a focus of epidemiological research and health reporting at the Robert Koch Institute.
