RKI publishes Report on the Epidemiology of Influenza in Germany 2017/18

The 2017/18 influenza season was exceptionally severe in Germany, according to the latest annual report by RKI’s Working Group on Influenza. According to the Working Group’s influenza surveillance data, there have been an estimated 9 million influenza-attributable medically attended acute respiratory illnesses, which is two million more than in the influenza seasons 2012/13 and 2014/15 which have also been very severe. Influenza is especially risky for the elderly who can become gravely ill or even die. Vaccination is still the best way of preventing an influenza infection; it is also recommended to keep your hands clean and stay away from sick people. The Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommends vaccination against influenza for all people over 60, for people of all ages suffering from chronic diseases, for pregnant women and for health care employees.
