Latest Ebola outbreak in Guinea: same virus as during the large Westafrican Outbreak in 2014

The latest eb outbreak in Guinea can be traced back to the same viral strain that circulated in the previous West African outbreak between 2014 and 2016, genetic analyses by several international research groups including RKI has shown. This outbreak was not created by a new zoonotic transmission event, but rather by a resurgence of the former strain, very likely transmolaitted by a survivor of the West African outbreak. The human origin of the current EVD outbreak and the associated shift in our perception of EBOV emergence, call for careful attention to survivors, however, without creating further stigmatization, RKI researchers write. Their findings have been published on the website virological.org (https://virological.org/t/guinea-2021-ebov-genomes/651)
