COVID-19: Surveillance and Studies at the RKI

In assessing the situation, the RKI relies on various surveillance instruments, models and studies. Some of the existing systems were expanded and some new systems were established. The RKI works closely with national and international partners. Some of the projects are listed here, the list is constantly being expanded.

Surveillance of all-cause mortality in various European countries. From Germany participation through Berlin and Hesse.


Laboratory-based Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2

Extension of the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (ARS) for the surveillance of SARS-CoV-2. See weekly reports in german and background and explanation in English.


Routine health data in real-time (SUMO)

SUMO is a system that enables the processing of routine data in real time and makes it available for public health surveillance


Wastewater Surveillance

Wastewater surveillance includes taking regular wastewater samples and examining these for the occurrence and quantity of certain pathogens like SARS-CoV-2.


Acquisition of the SARS-CoV-2 test numbers (completed)

The data and details of the tests carried out were published and explained once a week on Wednesday in the situation report.


COVIMO – COVID-19 vaccination rate monitoring in Germany (completed)

COVIMO was intended to regularly survey the German population on topics related to COVID-19 vaccination. The goal of the COVID-19 vaccination rate monitoring was to capture the willingness and acceptance of different population groups in Germany to get vaccinated, to identify possible barriers to vaccination uptake in a timely manner and to be able to derive appropriate communication measures.

Presentation of the 6-day forecasts of COVID-19 case counts by country based on a novel epidemiological model that integrates the effect of population behavior changes due to government measures and social distancing.

Analysis of movement flows in Germany based on aggregated cellular data


Seroepidemiological studies in Germany (completed)

Several antibody studies were conducted to answer questions about the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the population.
