Seroepidemiological Studies in Germany

Seroepidemiological studies have been of great interest since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They provide information on the proportion of the population that has already been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and include unrecognised infections (under-reporting).

The Observatory of Seroepidemiological Studies on SARS-CoV-2 in Germany (SERO-OBS Corona) provides an overview of sero-epidemiological studies on SARS-CoV-2 conducted in Germany. Since spring 2020, these studies have been continuously identified through systematic searches in study registers, literature databases including preprint publications as well as media reports.

The information displayed on the interactive map is based on this search and is regularly updated. Key data on these studies are available for download.

The study locations that are shown on the map can be adjusted by selecting or deselecting the target population and by choosing between nationwide and local/regional studies. Most studies investigating the spread of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the general population are based on samples of the resident population, but some studies are based on pre-pandemic cohort studies or on blood donor samples. Studies determining the spread of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in special populations are being conducted among employees in hospitals, care facilities and other settings. Studies that investigate both the general population and special population groups include studies in daycare centers, nurseries, or schools, in which both the children or adolescents and the caretakers are tested for antibodies.
