On 1 March 2015, Professor Dr Lothar H. Wieler became President and Head of the Robert Koch Institute. Lothar H. Wieler is a veterinarian specialised in microbiology who was formerly Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Epizootics at FU Berlin (for additional information see the link below).

The Vice President is Professor Dr Lars Schaade, a specialist in medical microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology. Before joining RKI, he held positions including Head of the Communicable Disease Unit at the Federal Ministry of Health (for additional information see the link below).

The heads of the specialist departments, the Centre for Biological Threats and Special Pathogens, Central Administration as well as the Project and Junior Research Groups, are directly subject to the institute leadership. The senior management (comprising the three units for Fundamental and Legal Issues, Genetic Engineering and the Regulatory Authority for the Import and Use of Embryonic Stem Cells), the three units for Research Coordination, Press and Public Relations as well as Global Health and Biosecurity are also directly answerable to the leadership. The offices of the Central Ethics Committee for Stem Cell Research, the Genetic Testing Commission and the National Advisory Committee Blood fall within the ambit of the institute leadership as well.
