Since 2015, Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Lothar H. Wieler has been president and head of the Robert Koch Institute. The veterinarian specialised in microbiology will leave the institute at his own request on 1 April 2023. Until replacement of his position, Prof Wieler’s tasks will then be fulfilled by his deputy Professor Dr Lars Schaade (see also press release by the Federal Ministry of Health and RKI on 11.1.2023, in German).

Professor Dr Lars Schaade, a specialist in medical microbiology and infectious disease epidemiology, has been Vice President of RKI since 2011. Before joining RKI, he held positions including Head of the Communicable Disease Unit at the Federal Ministry of Health.

The heads of the specialist departments, the Centre for Biological Threats and Special Pathogens, Central Administration as well as the Project and Junior Research Groups, are directly subject to the institute leadership. The senior management (comprising the three units for Fundamental and Legal Issues, Genetic Engineering and the Regulatory Authority for the Import and Use of Embryonic Stem Cells), the three units for Research Coordination, Press and Public Relations as well as Global Health and Biosecurity are also directly answerable to the leadership. The offices of the Central Ethics Committee for Stem Cell Research, the Genetic Testing Commission and the National Advisory Committee Blood fall within the ambit of the institute leadership as well.
