BMG approves 10 million euros for international COVID-19 projects of the RKI

As part of the Corona Global programme, the Bundesministerium für Gesundheit (BMG) is providing 9.9 million euros to the RKI for the period May 2021 to April 2023. Ten projects have been approved to strengthen operational capacity and to address urgent knowledge gaps on COVID-19 in collaboration with partners worldwide. The projects address:

  • Risk and impact of COVID-19 on selected groups, such as health care workers or refugees, and their specific occupational safety and health care needs;
  • Impact of COVID-19 on health care delivery systems, including hepatitis elimination and malaria- and tuberculosis-related health care delivery;
  • COVID-19-related burden of disease;
  • Use of digital means to support COVID-19 control, including the use of AI algorithms for event-based surveillance and the use of telemedicine in health care.

Five of the ten projects are being implemented with partners in African countries, four of the projects in collaboration with partners in Eastern European and Central Asian states. The ten projects are distributed throughout the RKI. Six of the ten projects are cross-departmental.

Next to the 10 RKI-projects, the BMG has approved five further projects which will be conducted by Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, the Research Center Borstel and the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (Friedrich Loeffler Institute). Information to all of the projects is available on the GHPP-Website:

The projects are an important RKI contribution to the global COVID-19 response.
