Following a GOARN call to support Tajikistan in the upscaling of local COVID-19 test capacities, laboratory and epidemiological experts from ZIG4, the Bernhard-Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), and the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST) participated in a scooping mission from 11.06.2020 to 27.06.2020. The aim of the mission was to identify the feasibility of a potential mobile laboratory deployment and to identify opportunities for the support of existing local diagnostic structures for scaling up test capacities and targeted training sessions. During the mission, different Tadjik public health laboratories were visited in Dushanbe as well as in remote regions of the country. The experts concluded that given the existing local structures and the restriction in air travel and transport targeted and tailored capacity buildings and staff trainings is the most effective way to support the country during this outbreak, rather a mobile laboratory deployment. The participating institutions agreed to provide further support to Tajikistan to scale up COVID-19 testing capacities and deliver trainings sessions to local public health experts. In this context, a follow up mission was planned by RKI and GOARN around the end of July 2020.
