Genetic Engineering

This unit is responsible for matters falling under the German law on genetic engineering.

It carries out studies in three areas:

  • human and animal health risk assessment
  • deliberate release and
  • market approval for genetically modified organisms

This third area includes evaluations of applications of novel foods and animal feed consisting of or containing genetically modified organisms. Under European Community Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 and Directive 2001/18/EC, the unit submits statements to Germany’s Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), the national regulatory authority.

One of the responsibilities of the unit under the area of health risk assessment is to consult regularly with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Security.
