Unit 35: Gastrointestinal Infections, Zoonoses and Tropical Infections

Klaus Stark
Hendrik Wilking

The unit focuses on surveillance of infectious diseases, outbreak investigations and epidemiological studies. The epidemiological situation in Germany is continuously assessed in the context of the international situation in order to identify potential public health threats early and to enable a timely response. The unit informs and advises medical professionals, the general public, and agencies on gastrointestinal infections, zoonoses and tropical infections.

  • Analysis, evaluation and publication of the surveillance data collected according to the "Protection against Infection Act" (IfSG).
  • Early detection of outbreaks and initiation of counter-measures in the field of public infectious disease control.
  • Assessment of information on the international emergence and incidence of infectious disease agents in the context of the epidemiological situation in Germany.
  • Investigations into the sources and routes of infection in infectious disease outbreaks, particularly of foodborne pathogens like EHEC, Salmonella, Listeria, Norovirus, Hepatitis A virus.
  • Epidemiological studies on disease burden, patterns of spread of infections, and risk factors as well as impact of intervention and control measures.
  • Studies on the incidence of imported infectious diseases (e.g., malaria, zika, dengue fever) as well as new and novel pathogens transmitted from animals to humans (zoonoses).
  • Development of concepts and recommendations for the control and prevention of zoonoses and food-borne infections.
  • Development of methods and algorithms for the detection of outbreaks and, in cooperation, evaluation and prioritization of suitable statistical methods for the evaluation and interpretation of epidemiological data.
  • Participation in national and international surveillance and research networks, for example:

    • COMPARE (Horizon 2020) Collaborative management platform for detection and analyses of (re-) emerging and foodborne outbreaks in Europe
    • Zoonoses consortium projects of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, (BMBF)
    • Food- and Water-borne Diseases Network (FWD) at ECDC
    • Emerging and vector-borne diseases Network (EVD) at ECDC
    • WHO Programme for the control of foodborne infections and intoxications in Europe (WHO Food Safety)
