Maintaining health in old age ("healthy ageing") is a priority public health concern. The international comparability of data regarding the health situation of the elderly population (for example, health behaviour, multi-morbidity, disability, social situation) is an essential prerequisite for being able to reliably assess prevention potential and supply needs.

With this as a backdrop, an international working group was constituted on the initiative of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the members of which include senior experts from large European cohort studies and research associations in Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Germany and from the World Health Organization (EUWAP).

The founding workshop, which took place on 22 and 23 November 2012 in the Robert Koch Institute has assessed the need for harmonisation to be very high based on existing studies and current data. For the future, close cooperation between the various research associations is planned with the aim of establishing the framework conditions of the comparison enabled database for transnational statements regarding the state of health of the elderly population.
