Cancer
As the general life expectancy of the population increases, so too does the number of cancer cases in Germany. Although survival rates in the case of cancerous tumours have improved due to advances in treatment, the overall number of deaths due to cancer has risen continuously in the past 30 years.
Epidemiological (population-related) cancer registries record and analyse the occurrence and frequency of tumour diseases and can thus outline the cancer situation in Germany.
The ZfKD Evaluates Cancer Data for Germany
The Centre for Cancer Registry Data (ZfKD) at the Robert Koch Institute pools the data on cancer in Germany collected in each German federal state. The data is checked in terms of completeness and plausibility and is synchronised for the entire country based on control numbers.
Using the data from the federal state cancer registries, the ZfKD regularly estimates and analyses the number of new cancer cases occurring each year. In addition to morbidity, mortality and survival rates, other indicators are calculated, such as prevalence and average morbidity and mortality risks.
The data generated at the ZfKD can be used to evaluate public health measures such as those on prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer.
