Current Issue: Health in Germany and Europe
Journal of Health Monitoring
DECEMBER 2024
ISSUE 4
Health in Germany and Europe is the main topic of the fourth issue of the Journal of Health Monitoring 2024. An important source of data on health in Europe is the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS), a population survey that is mandatory for all EU Member States. The EHIS collects data on health status, health care, health determinants and the socio-economic situation of the population in the EU Member States.
Two articles are dedicated to a comparison between Germany and Europe, based on data from EHIS 3 (2018-2020). Researchers from the Robert Koch Institute look at the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases, which are higher in Germany than the European average. However, the proportion of people who rate their health as very good or good is also higher in Germany. The article on the use of health care services shows that all the services examined - outpatient and inpatient care, medical examinations and the use of medicines - are used more in Germany than on average in the EU countries.
Two further articles deal with methodological aspects and necessary framework conditions: the European core indicators for health, which are an essential basis for international comparisons, and the European projects BRIDGE Health, InfAct and PHIRI, which build on each other on the way to a European health information system.
