Disease severity of the first COVID-19 wave in Germany using reporting data from the national notification system

Special Issue S11/2020 analyses the first COVID-19 wave in Germany focussing on disease severity.

The analyses are based on laboratory-confirmed cases with a SARS-CoV-2 infection that were reported to the Robert Koch Institute in line with the Protection against Infection Act. The article provides answers to the following questions: How severe were the majority of COVID-19 cases during the first wave? What age group did the majority of cases belong to? And, which characteristics were shared by the majority of severe cases?

In addition to its focus on disease severity, this article provides valuable information about particularly affected population groups.
