Issue 2/2021 presents new results from diabetes surveillance in Germany within the context of diabetes care and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first Focus article of the issue analyses the implementation and development over time of gestational diabetes mellitus screening participation and prevalence in Germany. The data basis is the external inpatient obstetrics quality assurance documentation, which covers all births in hospital.

The second article examines the prevalence of diabetes by age and sex and the frequency of secondary and concomitant diseases (obesity, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke and depression) based on 2019 Germany-wide statutory health insurance claims data.

In addition, three Fact sheets report on self-assessed quality of care among adults with diagnosed
diabetes, healthy life years among people with and without diabetes and the utilisation of outpatient medical services by people with diagnosed diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This issue also contains three Fact sheets with results from the study ‘KomPaS: survey on communication and patient-safety’ which cover the following topics: Needs of the population in Germany for information about health-related topics, searching for health information on the Internet and physical activity counselling by physicians.
