KiGGS Wave 1 is the first follow-up study of KiGGS. The data was collected by the Robert Koch Institute between 2009 and 2012. Some children, adolescents and young adults who had participated in the KiGGS baseline study were included again.

In addition, parents of children aged 0-6 years – of a new randomly selected study sample – were interviewed in order to also collect representative health data for children in this age group.

KiGGS Baseline Study (2003-2006)

The KiGGS baseline study was designed as a comprehensive, nationwide, representative interview and examination survey for the age group 0-17 years. Between May 2003 and May 2006, a total of 17,641 participants from 167 communities were enrolled.

The data obtained from each study subject include objective measures of physical and mental health as well as parent- or self-reported information regarding the subjective health status, health behaviour, health care utilisation, social and migration status, living conditions, and environmental determinants of health.

A comprehensive overview of the results can be found in a dedicated special issue of the journal “Bundesgesundheitsblatt” (“Federal Publication on Health, Health Research and Health Protection”) which was released in May 2007. The abstracts are available in English.
