Planned Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research at the RKI: Tasks, fields of activity and applications

Since January 2021, a "Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Public Health Research (ZKI-PH)" is being established at the Robert Koch Institute. The aim of the ZKI-PH is to combine the expertise traditionally anchored at the RKI in research into infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases with the methods of artificial intelligence in order to pave the way for digital epidemiology and to be able to counter epidemics of the 21st century even more effectively. Thus, the ZKI-PH will dovetail the topics of bioinformatics, computational epidemiology, modern data visualisation as well as big data and systems analysis with the central methodological building blocks of machine learning, artificial intelligence, decision research as well as the development of realistic computer simulations in the field of public health research.

In connection with the establishment and coordination of interdepartmental cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence, the ZKI-PH will be responsible for the strategic support of advances in the field of public health research using the latest AI-based technologies at the RKI. This includes, among other things, the development of new data sources for public health-related research, support for the implementation of AI-related projects at the RKI and the generation of research projects and projects. Through the ZKI-PH, opportunities and offers for an intensified and continuous exchange of knowledge and experience with internal, national and international partners in the field are to be created.
