Following the steep increase in AIDS cases and HIV infections at the beginning of the eighties, only small changes in the number of patients and in the composition of the afflicted groups have been noted since the beginning of the nineties. The proportion of homo-/bisexuals and i.v. drug users, the two groups currently at highest risk for HIV infection, among those newly infected even decreased somewhat and heterosexuals now form the third-largest group. If immigrants from pattern II countries are included, this group moves up to the second place. Nevertheless, this does not represent a separate epidemic in the heterosexually active population, since the large majority of domestically acquired infections can be traced back to contact with the known risk groups. However, this does not exclude the possibility that, independently of this fact, the situation in subgroups with increased promiscuity will worsen in future. In this connection, mention might be made of the HIV epidemic in the GUS countries, prostitution and sex tourism.
