In 2016, the Robert Koch Institute celebrated its 125th anniversary. One of the anniversary highlights was an international public health symposium on June 30th and July 1st, 2016, dealing with topical public health issues. On July 3rd, around 3,000 children, youths and their families “researched like the big ones” at RKI’s children’s day; 200 of them even had the possibility to visit RKI’s new BSL-4 laboratory. Throughout the year, RKI’s library had organised a series of talks about the institute’s history which was also open to external visitors.

Originally founded as the Royal Prussian Institute of Infectious Diseases on July 1st 1891, the institute has since experienced dramatic changes. Today, as the national Public Health Institute, the RKI is one of the most important institutions for health in Germany. The anniversary book “125 Years Robert Koch Institute – The Public Health Institute“ presents all RKI units and attached scientific committees.
