The RKI – a first rate Institute in a first rate place
Germany is near the top of the OECD's Better Life Index, which ranks the country as above average overall. The index gives it high marks for, among other things, work-life balance, jobs and earnings, and environmental quality and housing. Germany is also home to a scientific, medical and healthcare establishment that is known around the globe for its excellence.
The Robert Koch Institute's (RKI) headquarters and two other facilities are centrally located in the German capital, Berlin. The growing, multicultural city has a thriving academic community. Its many cultural and educational facilities offer opportunities to learn and grow or simply relax.
The main campus of the RKI can be found in Berlin's Wedding district. The site has been home to the Institute since 1900. There are two other RKI facilities located in the German capital as well.
The RKI has an additional branch in the town of Wernigerode in Germany's Harz region. Here the Institute is housed in a complex that integrates one of the oldest of the mid-century town's half-timbered buildings with modern laboratory and office facilities. Wernigerode has a number of institutions providing educational opportunities and cultural offerings, while its setting in the Harz region offers residents a wide range of recreational activities in nearby national parks.
Local and long-distance public transit in Berlin and Wernigerode are excellent, as they are in the rest of Germany. There are many means of reaching the surrounding countryside, regional centres, Europe and beyond.
