Tasks

Chronic infections with bacterial, fungal and parasite pathogens that evade current medical treatments are a mounting problem for the public health. Toxoplasma gondii causes untreatable chronic infections in 30% of humans world-wide. We use this protozoan as a model to investigate metabolic mechanisms that enable persistence and to identify novel intervention strategies. The PhD project aims to complement population-based metabolomic analyses with single cell-resolved microscopic data.

  • In vitro cultivation of T. gondii parasites and reverse genetic manipulation of T. gondii parasites (CRISPR, knock-out, knock-in)
  • Life - cell imaging, molecular biology methods
  • Publication and presentation of research results.

Your profile

  • A completed university degree (Masters, Diploma, Honours) in the field of life sciences, preferably biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or biophysics, which qualifies you to complete a PhD
  • Previous exposure to life - cell imaging, respective data analysis and molecular biological methods are advantageous
  • Solid skills in MS-Office applications or equivalent are required; knowledge in ImageJ and scripting are welcome
  • Required language skills (CEFR-level): advanced knowledge of English (at least C1). Although no German skills are required, applicants will be encouraged to develop such skills to maximize their integration into our institute.

You should have a proven interest in metabolism. You are also able to independently formulate scientific questions and develop experimental approaches. You have the ability to quickly take up new tasks and work independently with appropriate supervision to meet objectives. You’re open-minded and seize opportunities to network within and outside the institute.

The RKI is located in Berlin – Germany's vibrant, multicultural capital in the heart of Europe. The Institute's facilities are set in the environment of a clean, green city that is home to first class art, historical and science museums and well-known theatres. Public transit links to other districts and the surrounding countryside are excellent.

The RKI offers flexible work hours and terms of employment that promote in as far as possible employee life-work balance. Education and training are also provided based on employee needs. The RKI also has a comprehensive health maintenance program and assists incoming staff members and their families in settling in their new location.
