Im Konsiliarlabor für Pockenviren werden verschiedene diagnostische Methoden verwendet, um eine Infektion mit Pockenviren nachzuweisen. Es werden klassische virologische Verfahren eingesetzt und moderne molekulare Methoden weiterentwickelt, um eine schnelle, verlässliche Erkennung und Typisierung von Pockenviren zu ermöglichen. Außer humanen Pockenviren (Variola/Smallpox) können auch andere humanpathogene Pockenviren wie Kuhpocken-, Affenpocken- und Parapockenviren sowie weitere Pockenviren differenziert werden.
